Trail users are expected to follow all rules.

  • Speed limit 15 mph
  • No motorized vehicles or devices

The only exceptions are e-bikes and approved powered mobility devices that comply with the MTC’s transportation policies as well as emergency and police vehicles and trail maintenance equipment

  • Keep right except to pass.
  • Warn before passing.
  • Stay on Trail property.
  • Trail open daily, dawn to dusk.
  • Camp only in designated areas.
  • Leash and clean up after your pet.
  • No hunting.
  • No horses, except in specific parts of Cecil Township.

Rules for Trail Users with Horses

  • Horses are permitted only in Cecil Township between Hendersonville (Morganza Road) and Venice (Rt. 980).
  • Ride at your own risk.
  • Ride only on designated approved bridle trails.
  • Horses are not permitted on the improved surface. Ride on the grassy shoulder wherever possible.
  • Ride in single file and keep speed at a walk/trot only.
  • Dismount and lead your horse over bridges and through tunnels.
  • Curb your horse when possible. Clean up manure left on the path by pushing it to the side of the Trail.

Arrowhead Trail Rules

The Arrowhead Trail has its own set of rules, which you can review here. Peters Township maintains this section of the Montour Trail, located on the main line at MP 30.5 — 33.7 and on the Bethel Park branch at MP B-0 — B-0.3.

Additional Policies

  • No outside signage (such as political banners, advertising) permitted. This includes pamphlets in the Trail’s designated literature boxes.
  • Planned events must comply with the MTC’s Event Policy.

These Pennsylvania rules apply:
  • Bicyclists under age 12 must wear a helmet.
  • You must be at least 16 years old to ride an e-bike.

Prohibited electric vehicles*

      • E-scooters & e-skateboards
      • Hoverboards, single-wheel boards & one wheels
      • Segways
      • Golf carts
      • Motorcycles & mopeds
Gas-powered ATVs & quads are prohibited.*

E-bikes must meet restrictions.

  • Must have pedals and be operated only in pedal-assist mode
  • Power rating less than 750 watts
  • Weight under 100 pounds
  • Width 36 inches or less
  • Must be operated at a speed safe for conditions

Riding too fast for conditions is a top contributor to accidents.

Bikers should regulate speed depending on:

  • Proximity of other trail users
  • Congested sections
  • Faster/slower users
  • Dogs on leashes
  • Trail conditions (gravel, steep drops-offs, etc.)
