Signature Events

Following are the Montour Trail’s biggest annual events.  Check the Events Calendar for more information.

    • National Tunnel 10K/5K: Held every spring in Cecil Park since 2000 (late April)
    • J.R. Taylor Memorial Race/Walk: A Bethel Park Branch 5K run and fun walk (late May or early June)
    • Peters Friends Twilight Walk: Join us in McMurray for an evening walk, refreshments and raffles (last Friday in July)
    • Tour the Montour: Choose from fun rides of 6, 12, 24, 44 and 62 miles (late September)
    • Annual Dinner & Meeting (winter)

Meetings are the fourth Wednesday of the month at 7:00 PM. From May to August, meetings are held at the Cecil Henderson Road (Kurnick) access area; otherwise, the group meets at the trail office (304 Hickman Street, Bridgeville, PA).

J.R. Taylor Memorial 5K Run and Walk @ Washington Elementary School

J.R. Taylor Memorial 5K Run and Walk @ Washington Elementary School | Bethel Park | Pennsylvania | United States



This pleasant 5K out-and-back run and walk, all on the Montour Trail, begins 800 feet north of the trail’s J. R. Taylor Memorial Bridge over Clifton Road in Bethel Park, near McMurray Road. Runners will zoom along the flat, crushed limestone surface of the Montour Trail’s Bethel Branch to a turnaround point north of Brush Run Road and then return to the start. Runners and walkers will cross the bridge in both directions. All participants start together and receive chip-based times.


Pre-registration fee is $20 per person through May 13, $25 per person from May 14 to May 31, and $30 on race day.


The JR Taylor Memorial 5K run begins at 8:30 a.m. Walkers will begin at the same time.


Awards: Fleet Feet gift certificates to top 3 overall, male/female; medals to top master’s finisher (age 40 and up), top 3 in each age category (10 and under, 11-14, 15–19, 20–24, 25-29, 30–34, 35–39, 40–44, 45–49, 50–54, 55–59, 60–64, 65–69, 70+), male/female

All participants registered by May 13 will receive a t-shirt. Others will receive T-shirts if available.

Registration/Packet Pickup

Race location: Washington Elementary School, 515 Clifton Road, Bethel Park.  Parking is available in the Washington School parking lot and the upper section of the Al’s Café parking lot.

Advance packet pickup will be available at Fleet Feet, 1751 North Highland Road (Norman Centre II), from 5:00 to 7:00 Thursday, May 31 and 3:00 to 7:00 on Friday, June 1.

Race-day registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. at Washington Elementary School.

Other Information

Proceeds from the event goes toward the maintenance of the Bethel Branch of the Montour Trail.

South Hills Friends Work Party @ South Park Township

South Hills Friends monthly work party.  First Saturday of each month, 9:00 AM.  Meet at MP37.8, South Park sewage treatment parking lot along Piney Fork Road.  Work party occasionally moved to 2nd Saturday when necessary.  Contact: D Oyler, 412 831-9288 for additional information.

Peters Friends Meeting @ Peters Township Community & Recreation Center

Meetings are the first non-holiday Monday of the month at 7:00 PM. The group typically meets in the Peters Township Community & Recreation Center, but occasionally selects other venues. For more information, see the group’s Face Book page.

Bethel Friends Meeting @ Bethel Park Municipal Building Caucus Room

Meetings are held every first Tuesday of the month in the Bethel Park Municipal Building Caucus Room located immediately behind council chambers. Anyone interested in the Bethel Park Trail segment is encouraged to come.

Peters Friends Work Party

Work and clean-up parties are held on the first Wednesday and the third Saturday of each month, and otherwise as needed.

South Hills Friends Meeting @ Township Building
Jun 12 @ 6:30 pm

Meetings are the second Tuesday of the month at 6:30 PM, at the South Park Township Community Room or the Township Library, both located at the Township Building.

Work and trail clean up parties are scheduled for the 1st Saturday of each month and also advertised as needed. The work parties meet at the sewage treatment parking lot MP37.8 along Piney Fork Road, South Park at 9:30 AM.  All volunteers are welcome.
